about

This is Jabadaw’s debut CD, featuring an hour of sophisticated, melodic folk dance music. While the band’s music is firmly rooted in the tradition, this CD highlights the band’s growing collection of home-grown tunes: eight of the disk’s eleven tracks were composed by the band, and the rest are traditional pieces from Brittany, central France and the northwest of England.

"Hurdy-gurdy, sax, fiddle, bass, drums, Anglo-French repertoire. They inject chunks of funk into the tradition and there are definite shades of Le Gop! throughout. Not a bad sonic area to inhabit, really. They write a mean tune and they’ve surely got that swing." — frootsmag.com

"And there’s a decided French feel to Jabadaw’s self-titled debut release... Their sound, to quote me dear wife Brigid, is somewhere between Blowzabella and the Moving Hearts in their instrumental persona. Now given that they play New French Polkas on this CD that sounds like it could have been written by the blokes in Blowzabella, this is not a surprise. Other French cuts on this exemplary CD include Bourrée Droite / Bourrée à 3 Temps, Laridé à 6 Temps / Hanter Dro and and Dañs-Tro Plinn. Like Anchovy Cappuccino, this is uptempo dance music that is best played loud..." — www.greenmanreview.com

"Brace yourself for the The Venus of Levenshulme, it has the power of a hurricane, it will scatter dancers and leave them exhausted around the edges of the room." — www.webfeet.org

about

Jabadaw Manchester, UK

Jabadaw: a wonderful dance band with a gloriously full-colour sound.

Emerging in 1994 from the vibrant Manchester and Sheffield scenes, their uplifting Anglo-European grooves delighted dancers at festivals and ceilidhs up and down the country.

After splitting in 2007, ex-members went on to form acclaimed acts such as Methera and Pilgrims’ Way. They last played together in 2017.
